The Scientific Statement of Being

In 1886, Mary Baker Eddy published her first glimpse of the Scientific Statement of Being. Its refinement continued—again and again—until its present form in 1907.

This revelation underscores Eddy's discovery in Christian Science that:

  • God is divine Mind, pure consciousness

  • This Mind is the only Mind

Notice the subtleties in the evolution of the excerpts below about consciousness and matter, and savor their precious unfoldment.

1876

All is mind and there is no matter.¹

1881

All is mind; there is no matter. ²

1886

All is Mind.³

1891

All is Mind; there is no matter.⁴

1894

All is infinite Mind and its manifestation.⁵

1896

All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation,
for God is All in all.⁶

1902

All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation,
for God is All-in-all.⁷

Eddy’s Final Scientific Statement of Being
in the Christian Science textbook:

There is no life, truth, intelligence
nor substance in matter.
All is infinite Mind
and its infinite manifestation,
for God is All-in-all.

Spirit is immortal Truth;
matter is mortal error.

Spirit is the real and eternal;
Matter is the unreal and temporal.

Spirit is God,
and man is His image and likeness.
Therefore, man is not material, he is spiritual.⁸

We must always rewrite
everything we read.⁹

— Margaret Laird

Fast forward to 2024. Modern science today confirms Eddy’s cognition that matter—the concept of something separate and apart from pure consciousness—does not and cannot exist.

Discoveries in quantum physics confirm that matter is not a thing but rather the appearance of a thing; this is why matter is said to be an illusion. Note that the ‘thing’ is not the illusion; instead, the illusion is the perception of something independent of consciousness.

We do not abandon things,
but only the material sense of things.¹⁰

— Arthur Corey

What disappears in divine revelation,
is not human self-hood
but the belief that selfhood
is material and corporeal.¹¹

— Margaret Laird

What’s metaphysically scientific isn’t what we see with our eyes, but what we perceive with our spiritual vision.

Matter is not made of matter. Nor are you!¹²

— Deepak Chopra

Consciousness is all there is.¹³

— Dr. Tony Nader

Pure consciousness is all there is.¹⁴

— Margaret Laird

This world appears to be material.
Yet in reality, it is pure consciousness.¹⁵

— Yoga Vasishtha

Thus, today, standing on the shoulders of ancient Vedic Science, Christian Science, modern quantum physics, and contemporary Metaphysical Science, we do not seek to get rid of things but rather to see things as they really are: as manifestations of the one Mind. Here’s just one way we might today express the Scientific Statement of Being:

There is no life, truth, intelligence,
or substance in the concept called matter.

All is infinite pure consciousness and
its infinite manifestation,
for consciousness is All-in-all.

Consciousness is God, immortal Truth.
The concept of matter—
of something separate and apart from divinity—
is a mistaken, illusory point of view.
Consciousness being infinite, All,
such separation is impossible.

Consciousness is the real and eternal.
The concept of matter is the unreal and temporal.
Consciousness is divine, and
man (ifestation) is its divine image and likeness.

Therefore, neither the divine image
nor ‘things’ are—or could ever be—‘material.’

Reality is eternally ‘one unbounded ocean
of consciousness in motion.’¹⁴

I AM THAT.
THOU ART THAT.
ALL THIS IS THAT.
THAT IS CONSCIOUSNESS.¹⁵

— The Upanishads
